We stayed and got married at the Gilpin hotel near the lake house.

I don’t normally wear dresses, but ordered my dress online from phase eight and it was perfect, I saw it and said that’s the one!

Yes we did, I had a lovely bouquet from carmen campbell.

Matthew and Jane met 4 years ago whilst Matthew was in his penultimate year at university. Although they both attended the same university, their paths didn’t cross until after Jane had graduated. A chance encounter over university accommodation for a friend of Jane’s was the first time they met. They chatted and realized they had been at the same university for a number of years, had mutual friends, hung out in the same buildings but never once saw each other (Matthew says seeing Jane’s face is something he would have never forgotten!)

Though their meeting was far from conventional, they exchanged numbers, went for a drink to discuss the accommodation….and the rest was history!

They had loads of adventures together, culminating in the biggest adventure of all; when Matthew asked Jane to marry him on New Year’s Eve 2019 at Liverpool Waterfront.

They planned the wedding for November 2020, and we all know what happened in 2020! That said, restrictions were easing by the autumn so they planned to go ahead with just 15 guests and had to scramble to rearrange their wedding in 3 days before the November lockdown started!

Since they never got to experience a full wedding, they accepted an unexpected offer from our original decorator @sweetpea_and_ivy to model in their beautiful themed wedding shoot earlier this year. They loved every second of it and decided to embark on this new adventure together where they could showcase the amazing talent of lots of different suppliers in the wonderful wedding industry!

The glorious images you’re about to see tell the story of a couple eloping to Paris to marry in the capital city of romance. Our bride’s beautiful Savin London gown is perfect for a statement bridal look on the quaint Parisian streets. Her groom’s dapper Alexandra Wood suit matches perfectly, and the stunning bouquet created by a local florist couldn’t fit the luxe elopement look better!

This was all sent in by our lovely friend and destination wedding photographer Amanda Karen Photography, who says, “I could spend hours and hours wandering the streets of Paris, the cafes, stunning doorways and beautiful streets are a photographer’s dream for shooting.”

“Of course, you can’t shoot a Paris elopement without catching the Eiffel Tower, but head there early for minimal tourists! There are so many other little spots we passed on this Paris elopement shoot and so many ideas for couple portraits that we just didn’t have time to do!”

Wendy’s dress was made in pale peachy pink silk satin with incredible beaded and applique tulle overlay. Silk chiffon flowers with bold colour print, pearls and glass beads fade from neckline to hem.? The shape was simple and flattering, a column dress with round neckline, cap sleeves and puddle train. Felicity hinted at Wendy’s waistline with a line of tiny beads and included a dipped back neckline to show off her beautiful skin.?

I love this elopement because of Wendy and Nigel’s determination to get wed despite Covid and some major hurdles in 2020. I love it because it’s a fantastic opportunity to say you don’t have to be in your twenties to have an incredible, beautiful wedding or elopement, or to be cover stars on a major wedding blog. In fact, this is our happy couple’s second wedding blog feature! We hope you’ll agree, their elopement is out-of-this-world stunning – as are the happy newlyweds!

How did you choose your photographer?

We looked at all the photographers’ sites which had been recommended by our venue and just loved Tom’s images, totally fitted with our hopes for the day.

We absolutely loved our photography, Tom captured the whole day to perfection. We eloped!, so it was literally our perfect day and Tom knew all the fabulous places to take us for some incredible photography and video, his local knowledge meant that we had moody fog and then stunning sunny beach memories …. just incredible, whilst being super relaxed and really special.

Videographer details if applicable – and any thoughts for other couples about having a wedding video?

Tom also shot our video, we only wanted a little film and what we have is just great … even past the credits!!

Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?

We both felt incredible in our outfits. Originally I thought I might go tea length, but I am so thrilled that I went long, Felicity my dressmaker was just brilliant and we created a dress that I love and loved looking at in the photos afterwards. Nigel felt wonderful in his new suit and we had a lot of fun picking our his tie and pocket square. As it was lockdown the shopping experience was pretty much on line, I sourced my fabric and Felicity found the most beautiful embroidered tulle, Nigel managed to get his suit, once lockdown lifted and we both felt so special on the day.

How did the pandemic affect your wedding plans? Do you have any advice to share with couples planning their weddings right now?

Our wedding plans honestly did not have to change, we wanted to elope and then share with our friends and families on our return from Cornwall, this is the only time we were affected, our venue as the rule of six came in, so our plan of an outside marquee for 12 ended up being divided by 2! We still hope to have a big family and close friends celebration when we can.

Tell us about your venue – what made this place special for you?

We were married at Boho Cornwall, in the small village of St Just, Maya and Tom were wonderful and were able to help us create our perfect day without any stress. We even had a wonderful vintage car to take us around Cornwall and then out to dinner in the evening we honestly could not have asked for more, plus they were our witnesses and kindly agreed to reading during the ceremony.

Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness

I had a bouquet made by Jenny of wild and chic, who is local to the venue, she couldn’t have been better, I had stunning Cornish lilies and have since bought a whole lot of bulbs so that I can enjoy them every September in the garden. Nigel had a button hole which matched my flowers.

Did you hire a wedding planner?

We didn’t need a planner as it was so teeny tiny and Maya and Tom (Boho Cornwall) were able to help with any details.

As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?

We didn’t have a cake, just a massive hamper from Rebecca at Indulgence Catering.

Did you personalise your vows or have any wedding readings? What were they?

We wrote our very special own readings and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

What was your first dance song? Why did you choose it?

We had all our favourite tunes played whilst we enjoyed champagne and just indulged in our gorgeous intimate wedding, it was beyond special.

“Due to Covid, we had our original flights cancelled and our hotel and venue closed early which meant we had to make changes to our plans. It made us a little nervous it would be cancelled or we wouldn’t be allowed to fly but we never considered cancelling it ourselves.

Throughout the summer we tried to keep focused on the wedding plans, had our stag and hen do’s (when restrictions were lifted) and just the excitement of getting married kept us positive.

If another couple is thinking to plan a wedding in Greece this summer, then we say go for it! It will be perfect in every way.”

How did you choose your photographer?

It was pretty easy. I first found Maxeen Kim’s work on Pinterest. This led me to a blog of a wedding on Lefkada of which Maxeen was the photographer. I was instantly drawn to her style, the pastel colours, basically how perfect and dreamy the photos looked! I knew she was going to be our photographer.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

Maxeen did not disappoint, she was incredible, she seemed to know what I wanted even without me saying anything. That’s what makes her amazing at her job! I don’t usually like photos being taken of myself and she made me feel at complete ease. We had such a wonderful experience with Maxeen and we couldn’t be happier with our beautiful photographs.

Did you hire a wedding planner?

Claire Salisbury from Lefkas Weddings. I couldn’t have planned our wedding without Claire! If anyone is considering having a wedding planner, definitely have one. Claire took the stress out of planning our wedding because she would send me tasks to complete, helped with ideas, kept us up to date with any changes etc regarding Covid-19, she had plans for every eventuality and was always at the end of a text or email. Throughout the whole 18 month process, Claire was fantastic!

Claire’s professionalism, organisation, knowledge and attention to detail is second to none. We can’t thank Claire enough for our perfect day.

Claire says: Shelby & Daniel’s romantic destination elopement took place in the autumn sunshine with a pampas and pastels aesthetic, and a tulle a-line gown by Bellami from Wed2b — a perfect choice for curvy brides with a major romantic streak. Overlooking the inspiring Lefkada landscape, the Ionian sea, mountains, and coastline views were perfect for their romantic celebration.  Saying your vows in a boutique hotel is a fantastic idea, especially for couples who love comfort and luxury.

The luxury retreat where the couple stayed and married, was a serendipitous choice. With just 3 weeks to go to the wedding the impact of Covid on the summer season caused their original hotel and venue both to close early, leaving our lovely couple without a place to say I do. Luckily with our contacts we swiftly moved everything to Katouna Suites which perfectly combines sophistication, the tranquillity of an adults only stay with discreet luxury and comfort, perfect for an elopement!

Tell us about your venue – what made this place special for you?

Our wedding venue wasn’t actually our first choice due to our original venue closing early due to Covid. We got married at Katouna Suites. It is a luxury boutique adult-only hotel. It was all change a week or two before our wedding but we knew the place would be perfect and we fully trusted our brilliant wedding planner, Claire. The views were truly amazing, the staff treated us like family and they made sure our special day was perfect.

A must!! We are so happy we made the decision to have a videographer. A perfect way to look back on our special day and relive it all again. Also for our family and friends who weren’t there, they are able to watch our wedding.

Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?

Due to Covid, I was quite worried about the dress shopping experience and it all felt very last minute as the shops were closed due to lockdown. On the first day of the bridal shop opening at the beginning of July, I had an appointment. I went to Wed2Be in Nottingham. It was a great experience, I tried on 3 dresses and I said yes to the dress! I did however want to alter the dress by adding a corset and changing the sleeves. The alterations were all done by the lovely team at Black Butterfly also in Nottingham. They knew I didn’t have much time but made it happen! I was delighted with my dress, it was just what I imagined it to be! As for Daniel’s outfit, he knew he wanted chino shorts and a white shirt with tan accessories. All of his outfit was from Next.

Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness

Yes, our planner’s florist is extremely talented at what they do. I love all things pastel especially pink, my favourite flowers are peonies and I am obsessed with pampas grass! So these three things had to be included in the floristry.

Tasos and Christina turned my floral dreams into reality. Everything was perfect and we would not have changed a thing.

As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?

We chose a naked lemon sponge cake as we love the rustic style and wanted something light. It was delicious and everyone else enjoyed it too!

Tell us about any special personal touches, or creative projects you made yourselves

Although we didn’t make anything ourselves, we chose to support small businesses by having things handmade such as personal vow books, agate name place coasters and a Perspex acrylic sign.

Did you personalise your vows or have any wedding readings? What were they?

We wrote our own vows so it was a surprise to each other on the day. We chose a lovely poem to be read out called The Giraffe & The Monkey by Daniel Thompson. We also did sand pouring which was a special experience and is now a lovely keepsake on display in our home.

What was your first dance song? Why did you choose it?

Ed Sheeran and Beyonce – Perfect Duet. We love both artists, the words resonate with us and it’s simply a beautiful song.

How did you choose your photographer?

We went to the NEC wedding show in Birmingham on a whim, the first stand we came across was for Chris and we instantly fell in love with his work. Photography was the first thing we arranged as we felt it was one of the most important aspects, we booked him straight away and planned the wedding around his availability!

YES! Chris’ photographs are so different from the usual wedding pictures you see, communication leading up to the big day was great and he is such a pro at what he does.
The day before the wedding we had a pre wedding shoot at various locations in Manhattan including Time Square, Central Park and Hell’s Kitchen. When you’ve never had professional pictures taken before and then you’re stood in the middle of Time Square with your photographer lying on the floor and a LOT of people stood around watching it’s a shock to the system! Chris has great energy though and we got into the swing of things quickly. He makes you feel at ease and just makes it feel so much fun!
On our wedding day Chris arrived at our hotel along Central Park South promptly and just got straight to work, there was six of us in total with 2 guests and Chris and his assistant. Everyone was having such a fun day it felt as though we were all old friends. Our album turned out better than we could have ever imagined, and everyone we’ve shown it to has been genuinely blown away.

Tell us where you eloped – what made this place special for you?

New York City is a very special place for us, we go as often as we can and we got engaged there in 2017.
We knew from the start that we didn’t want a traditional wedding at all so we decided to elope, and had just 2 guests, John and Roisin, family who live in Manhattan.
On our wedding day we got married at the City Clerks Office which was a really fun experience. There’s a great buzz about the place. Everyone else was there to celebrate the same thing, so there was a great atmosphere. We then walked a couple of blocks to a diner for brunch and mimosas! It was surreal walking through Manhattan in full bridal wear, but the locals loved it! They even offered us umbrellas when it began to drizzle.
The afternoon was spent with Chris capturing more amazing photos, this time in Brooklyn and the day ended with drinks in an Irish bar!

Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?

We loved our outfits on the day, I found choosing a dress quite overwhelming with so much choice, but I enjoyed the dress fittings more.
Daniel chose a grey Reiss suit with pink tie & brown brogues from Brooks Brothers.
The dress and veil were from Wed2B, and the heels and bag were from Jimmy Choo.

Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness

No, the day before the wedding we went to Chelsea Market and bought 3 stems of white hydrangeas and some white ribbon and made my own bouquet! The hotel kindly kept them in water overnight to keep them fresh. Then at the end of the day gave them to a friend of our guest in the bar!

As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?

We had dinner in the evening at the River Café in Brooklyn which was an incredible experience. The best meal we’ve ever had at a restaurant, with views out over the river looking onto the Manhattan skyline at night – perfect! We didn’t have a wedding cake but we did have mini chocolate versions of the Brooklyn Bridge which were very delicious!
